4.04 Detroit Vipers - RB Malcolm Brown

In the real world: Brown, a five-star recruit out of high school, averaged 3.9 yards a carry last season with Texas. But that low average shouldn't fool you. First, the Texas Longhorns' offensive line last season was decimated by injuries and relatively inexperienced, and just wasn't very good. Second, Texas' passing game wasn't that effective, meaning that opposing defenses could "stack the box" against the run. Nevertheless, Brown went undrafted. The St. Louis Rams picked him up, and right now, he's behind Todd Gurley, Tre Mason and Benny Cunningham.
In the TUFF world: The Vipers have a decent trio of RBs--Mark Ingram, Giovani Bernard and Shane Vereen--but no depth beyond those three. They failed to address that issue in Rounds 2 and 3, so they're starting to address it with this pick, acquired earlier in the draft from San Diego.

Brown got the edge over the other available backs because he has shown that he is competitive--he can run with power, finish his runs, fall forward to get that extra yard, and wear down opposing defenses. NFL.com may compare him to Chris Ogbonnaya, but I'd just as soon compare him to BenJarvus Green-Ellis.
